I thought the AMP steps had their own control module. Hmmm... If so, maybe I can get just that module from them for cheap enough. Lemme dig some more.

I thought about getting them for the price. But, I really don't have "play money". I'm one that usually just finds ways to get what I want when the deal is too good to pass. I'm fine with my stationary running boards and like that they sorta act as guards for the lower half of the body. I'd get flaps if I got the retractable steps (more $). I thought about just hanging onto them, but I have a feeling I'd end up offloading them later at a loss. I'm overloaded with more important projects.

They might have their own module. I haven't looked at the instructions in a while. I would think if you could get a dealer to give you the wiring schematic for the boards and motor you could rig it up to turn on when unlocked and drop down when door opens. Even could search for the harness off a junk vehicle then add to yours. I'm positive the wiring on the truck is ready just need the harness to connect BCM to boards.

I thought oem was more involved. Using the bcm, there a switch inside to override the power steps. Not sure if it requires modules to be programmed into bcm like the oem advanced 2 way remote.

Findings thus far. This is info collected from the interwebz so I can't validate the accuracy of the sources:

For a totally OEM conversion, in addition to acquiring the wiring harness, there is a module (virtual?) to be programmed in the BCM for this. The problem is that turning this function on affects the turn signals and they won't operate properly or not at all. I guess vehicles that came stock with these things had a different turn signal system. AMP Research sells replacement parts and their controller module is $92. I'm sure the part of their wiring harness that plugs into this controller would be needed as well. But, I don't know if the AMP motor assembly has anything special built into it for the controller to know when the step is fully extended or retracted or jammed anywhere in-between and if it works by some sort of trigger or current draw or both. If the controller is fully self-contained and just has two wires to operate the motor, theoretically, I could simply follow their instructions on hooking up the AMP controller to the Tahoe, then connect the motor power wires from the controller to the OEM step motor. But, if the controller operates and senses the step's movement based on amperage, there's no guarantee that the OEM motor draws similar amps when operating as the AMP motor does.

Call me lazy and poor, but there's too many uncertainties for me to begin investing the time and money into something I was entertaining only because of the cheap initial cost. It's looking like a project that will snowball well beyond the point of being worth it. Even then, it's something just for a small "cool factor". I'd rather just spend one dollar amount for what I consider a better cool factor: The $150 for the coil relocators I need as the final component to my drop.

In all of my digging, I ran across something that I think I'll be satisfied with: Adding a 3/4"-1" wide strip of chrome trim to my running boards and along the back bumper to mimic the Denali and Escalade trims. I'm not big into bling, but I still wanna add some classiness to what I believe is concurrent to the LTZ trim level. The simple chrome strip down low will tie the black plastic of the steps in with the wheels and door handles. If I decide that it's too much, it'll come right off.

I wish I was as smart as you when it comes to stuff like this. I'm too hardheaded! I'd buy it and try to make it work, where eventually I'd sell it. Good call!

Thank ya! I've had (and still have!) many incomplete projects because I ran into dead ends due to lack of time and/or funds and/or possibilities and/or just plain motivation. I feel I'm avoiding another one of those projects by stopping before getting started on this one.

Thanks everyone for your input!

The first time I saw power boards operate was in a gas station. A rather petite woman was jumping out the truck. The board opened delayed I guess and kicked her feet out from under her. She hit her head like three places on the truck before hitting the ground. I tired so hard not to laugh. I have never wanted to even consider them since that moment.

There's a company that makes a universal wiring harness for running boards. There was a thread here with the info. The guy said that he got them to work. I would buy this Ness and take it to a car audio shop audio AND let them wire it up!

Well, I'll be damned. Had I known about that I probably would've bought those steps. I could wire them up myself so I would've had power steps for $320.
