04 Z71 Tahoe,
it feels like I dont have power steering only in the right direction, I can turn left just find but at a standstill or slow speeds if I try to turn right its hard as heck.

A while back had to replace my STEERING GEAR due to leakage. Pretty much had all the symptoms you are describing and then some. After changing the gear it was night and day.

Before you go changing stuff, follow these step to pinpoint the problem. that way you save MONEY and not give it to jerky Mechanic.

1. Check tire pressure, are they Low?
2. Check Fan Belt condition and tension?
3. Check hose for kinks or binding?
4. Check for LEAKS, pump and gear and hose..etc.
5. Check for NOISE...pin point it.
6. Check steering component...links,pitman,...etc..

It's most likely between the pump and gear that's causing the prob.
(If you're a DIY guy and like to tackle this and need help don't be afraid to ask.)

I'm actually going thru the exact same issue. Chevy has a bulletins out for this problem and they recommend changing the steering box to a 680 box which I think is from gmc's. Apparently it has a 670 now. The 670 has 3 bolts securing the steering shaft housing. If you have that gear box and those problems the rcommendation stands.

I haven't done it yet finding best place to buy parts with dealer part numbers. N have to replace pitman and idler arms for my alignment. Good time to takle the box.
