I have a 2000 Tahoe, its getting up there with 195K on it, but still running strong! I have to pull a trailer tomorrow or the next day, for a lift I'm renting for the day. I haven't used my trailer lights in at least 5 years and have only used them a few times since I bought the truck brand new. I figured I should check out the wiring before I go to the lift rental place and find out that it doesn't work. Also, the guy at the lift rental place said that their trailer has a 4 pin connector on it, while my Tahoe has the 7 pin connector from the factory. My brother has a converter that plugs in to the 7 pin connector and converts it to a 4 pin connector, so I borrowed that and tried to test it tonight. I turned on the left turn signal and took my voltmeter to the back of the truck. I connected the negative lead on my meter to the connector on the 4 pin unit that the white (ground) wire connected to and tried touching each of the other 3 connectors with the positive lead from my meter, nothing happened on any of the 3.

So, my questions are, first, was I testing it correctly? Now that I'm sitting here, I was just thinking that maybe I should have touched the negative lead from my meter to a ground on the frame instead of the connector for ground on the 4 pin. If I did test correctly, where to go from here to get these lights working? I did check the list of fuses in the owners manual and checked any fuse that I thought could have something to do with the trailer lights, they were all fine. The brake lights and turn signals on the truck all work fine. Any ideas on troubleshooting this? I really need to get it working by Thursday because I really need to get this lift to complete a job. Thanks!

I think there is a connection(plug) up by the spare somewhere. Check to see that the connection is good. Also, double check all your fuses. The trailer wiring may be fused with something that you wouldn't think it would. Good luck.

The trailer fuses are in the fuse-box on the side of the dash where the door connects.

There are also fuses under the hood which control lights too.. be sure to check it.

And yes, check the connection by the spare tire too.
