Problems

I have a 2006 Z71 Tahoe, I've gotten several "service 4wd" displays on the odometer. And today on the push button panel the red neutral light lit up, I put the transmission in neutral selected 2wd backed up, and all seems to be working. Any ideas as to what is going on? Also, if the transfer case had gone into neutral then I would not have been able to drive right? Doesn't that affect all both axels?

I've been having the same message come up now for a couple of days. For the most part.. all seems to be working ok.. but. I notice the lights on the button selector sometimes are lit up.. and I can select 2wd or 4wd etc.. and then.. sometimes it's not lit up at all and I can't make any selections. It seems to re set itself when I shut the tahoe off and then start it up again.
Anybody have any ideas what's going on with this?
I'm not sure if it's coincidence, but just prior to this.. I had some cannister vent thing under the truck replaced and the code cleared for that.
Anybody's input would be appreciated.
