Pulley Bearing Noise???!!!

2003 escalade 6.0L

We've got what sounds like a pulley bearing whine/rattle, but only when accelerating, not when idling.

could be anything. you could remove the serpentine belt and check all the pulleys separately for any play or noise when you spin them. shouldn't be any play in the pulleys and they shouldn't make any noise when spun by hand.

They should also feel smooth in your hand when you spin them. By the way, it is not uncommon for the P/S pullet to have slight in and out play when you pull/push on it.

Also, does the sound get louder/faster when you accelerate?

Guessing 03 is over 150k usually one of the idlers. If you find a bad one change them all if you can.

Yea, like Steven said, all idlers and tensioners and belt(s) if old enough.

As recommended above, replace the tensioners and the belts. It is a reasonably cheap job, using parts from Rock Auto, and it is an easy job to perform.

I recently replaced my A/C tensioner, (as the spring failed) and at the same time, I replaced both the A/C belt and the serpentine belt. The job took less than 2 hours.

try taking off the ac belt and see if the noise goes away, you can just leave it dangling from the main pulley it wont hurt anything. To take the belt off just reach up under the truck and stick a 3/8" ratchet into the center of the tensioner pulley and twist it enough to release the belt.

As an aside, checking all the accessories and idlers is a good move - but don't wait. I had a noise start in my Yukon a while back, thought it was belt noise because it was wet weather, and less than 30 minutes later (of very, very light easy driving, nothing over 1600rpm) the pulley came clean off the water pump and stranded me. I wouldn't take it far if I were you. Just my two cents

Diagnosing something like that can drive a guy nuts. You rack your brain going over the different systems in a vehicle and how they work under certain conditions and then you get tunnel vision.
