I need to do a tune up on my hoe, she's over 100k already. And I was looking in to putting synthetic oil on her, since I've been using regular oil all this time. I found this on the O'Reilly ad, and for $20 bucks for synthetic I've figured is not bad. To me Oil is Oil, but do you guys have any suggestions to something better, or do you guys think the O'Reilly brand is good, by the way what oil filter do you guys recommend to go with the synthetic oil. Thanks and keep hoeing

Go with Mobilone high mileage, since youre over 100,000k. I just recently switched mine with 200,000k miles and havent had any leaking problems.

A lot of people say there will be leaking problems when you switch to synthetic in a higher mileage vehicle but the mobilone high mileage is meant to prevent this.

Any reason you want to switch to a synthetic besides price? Conventional oils today are very high quaility if you stick with the name brands (Mobil, Pennzoil, Castrol, etc.). If you change conventional every 4k to 5k miles you'll be fine. Wal-Mart has the best deals on oil and oil selection, but recently their oils have gone up in price slightly.

If you have time, head over to Bob Is The Oil Guy (BITOG) and start reading. TONS of info on oils and oil filters over there. http://www.BobIsTheOilGuy.com

A lot of people think oil filters are all built the same. That is not the case at all. The general consensus on BITOG is K&N, PureONE, Mobil1, Napa Gold, WIX, and Fram Extended Guard are the best. The worst oil filters would be any Fram that is not the Extended Guard model (Extended Guard is the only one with metal end caps inside the filter). All the oil filters I listed have metal end caps inside the filter and have good anti-drain back valves.

Isn't that pretty much every NAPA branded product? My truck has "NAPA" shocks in the front and Monroe shocks in the rear.....and they are both Monroe SensaTrack shocks.

I've seen a blend of synthetic and regular oil high mileage, is that the one you talking about?

Thanks for the link, I guess it's time to educate myself on the differences of oil, and filters, didn't know about the metal end caps inside. Good info.

Is that what came with the truck, or you had them replaced?

I've never had synthetic oil in my car, always use Castrol on my car. So I've heard that synthetic is the way to go, because it better lubricates the engine, and makes it run smoother=higher mpg. That's the only reason why I was thinking of switching. You figured at the price of synthetic that it would be better oil right? It's time to read me some Bob. Great info guys. Keep Hoeing

This man speaks the truth. I would go as far as to say you would fine changing high quality dino oil every 7500 miles even. There are plenty of people who have run conventional oils upwards of 15k...in high performance vehicles no less, and sent their oil samples to Blackstone labs only to find out the oil had lost little to NO viscosity, etc. Filters are another story. Definitely go with one of the ones listed above and steer clear of the Fram cheapies.

Here is a long post I made in another thread regarding Royal Purple. I hope you have time to read it.

As for the rest of your post, it seems like you, along with a lot of the car enthusiast crowd have fallen victim to the major oil companies advertising campaigns saying synthetic oils are so much better than convention oils. This is not your fault as these major oil companies spend millions of dollars on advertisements.

This is not true at all. Synthetic oils will not give you better MPG and lubricate the engine better than a name brand conventional oil. Conventional oils are cheaper part due to the major ad campaigns oil companies do to push their synthetic oils. Someone has to pay for these ad campaigns pushing the synthetic oils, so the price of the ad campaigns are connected to each bottle of synthetic oils these major oil companies sell, hence the higher price of synthetic oil. I hope that makes sense. I do realize synthetic oils are more expensive for other reasons, but ad campaigns are a but part of their price.

Here is a great thread on Bob Is The Oil Guy talking about the 7 biggest myths regarding oil.

I agree, you defiantly can go that far on conventional like you said, but is all boils down to your driving habits. If you do a lot of short trip driving where the motor doesn't get up to temperature for a sustained period of time (condensation and fuel doesn't burn off in the oil), you'll have to change the oil a lot more frequently over a vehicle that goes on longer drives, regardless if you're using a conventional or synthetic.

I've always believed to really take advantage of synthetic oil and run 8k+ miles in between oil changes you have to have a limited number of short trip drives. If you do short trip drives, you're just wasting money running synthetic and should be running conventional since you'll have to change your oil more frequently.

With all that said, I run Mobil1 0w-40 synthetic in my Tahoe. lol. Main reason is I do long drives in between oil changes so I can take advantage of a longer oil change interval that a synthetic provides over a conventional oil.

I read what you posted on the other thread, and you left me enlighten with what you said. I didn't know about the grade when it came to oil. But I'm sold on the Mobil 1 that you use, being it grade IV. Threads like this not only help, and inform the people looking for that answer, but also gives us knowledge, so as a consumer we don't get had. Thanks for the info, there is always somebody with the knowledge. I need to ask you kman. What oil filter do you use? Hey Kman, is the M1 that you talking about on the O'Reilly flyer?
