I'm not real certain where the proper place for this question is so I decided to post it in the general thread for maximum exposure.

I know that 285/45/22 is the factory size tire and I see a lot of guys running 305/40/22...

My question is do any of you run a 285/40/22 and if so what are your thoughts vs the other two I mentioned???

I am thinking about getting new wheels and I am very seriously considering the 285/40/22 tires to give me just a tad more clearance on the wheel wells and such.

Any help or opinions are appreciated.

Where exactly do you need clearance? Are the tires rubbing anywhere and what part (inside and/or outside shoulder(s), top of tread on fender liner, etc.)?

The 285/40 calculates to 1.1" shorter, so that'd give you half an inch shorter sidewall which is half an inch more clearance. But it's the same width so if the outer shoulder hits the fender lip, then all you'll gain is a mere 1/2" more suspension travel before contact but at the expense of shorter sidewall, 1-3 MPH faster speedometer and 3.4% more mileage for a given actual mileage traveled.

If you just need/want the clearance more around the outer edges of the tread and you can't roll you fender lips, maybe a narrower but closer to the stock height tire would do? A 275/45 calculates to .6" shorter, resulting in a hair over 1/4" shorter tire and .1" sidewall loss. The width is .4" narrower, so you'd have almost 1/4" clearance from the outer shoulder to the fender lip. It's traveling distance is only 1.2" longer and the speedometer will be off only around 1.2% (.2-1 MPH slow)

It will be about an inch shorter height tire, with more revolutions per mile, so the speedo and probably the trans shifts will be all screwy unless you have a tuner and can change tire diameter/revs in the tune

EDIT: DAMN SLOW TYPING ON SMALL PHONE KEYBOARD.... LOL

Also something to consider would be the width of the wheels that you are purchasing. The reason for running 305’s would be for a wider wheel—normally 11-12”..12 1/5 max with 305 as a minimum. The other information in regards to wheel height as you mentioned 40 vs 45 has already been stated by other posters. If your concern is height mainly 40 series but remember you may not like the ride without a quality tire. The 285 vs 305 is all about wheel width, which could be affected by the chosen wheels offset if that makes sense. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I am looking at a 22" X 9.5" wheel with a 30mm offset.

I don't rub while turning the wheel lock to lock but every once in a while if I hit a big dip just right the front tires will make contact with the inner wheel well... it's not often and it's just enough to feel/hear it.

I'm not sure what the width is on my factory 20's... I don't have the 5 spoke wheels like most, I have the optional 6 spoke wheels but I assume they are probably the same width as the others.

I want to say that I remember reading that they were 8.5" wide but I could be wrong.

After going back and looking some more it appears that a 275/45/22 would be closer to the 275/55/20 in all aspects.

Yes- very close. The stock 22" tire size of 285/45 is .6% larger than the 275/55-20 and the 275/45-22 is .6% smaller. One will read .5 MPH faster than actual (at 80 MPH) and the other will .5 MPH slower.

I use this for comparison: https://tiresize.com/comparison/

I had a set of the factory 20’s and I believe they were 9” wide. The 305 I run now is on 22 which is 9.5”. When I ordered the wheels and tires they offered 285 or 305 upon asking why they said one for cars and one for trucks but I can’t recall the aspect ratio of the 285. How about some pics of the new wheel?

I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone to ask for pics... lol

Most of you can probably guess what style I went with... but I will post a teaser...

I decided on the 285/40/22 after all.

I can adjust the speedometer with my Diablo, although it won't be off that much.

They should be here next week if all goes well.

Hopefully get them on the following weekend then I'll post pics.
