i've never seen any more than mine, so i don't know what they look like. can someone tell me if i have the nylon-type?

as you can see, my transfer case seal is due. got the seal and the new fluid, just need to find a minute to do it.
and, while i am on the floor, check this out- time for a new cover maybe? the picture doesn't do it much justice. this cover makes Danny Trejo's face look blemish free:

Cover looks fine, it's not something you just replace because. You might want to pull it and replace the gasket and fluids ...

Those are stock UJoints. I was able to heat mine in my Camaro and get them to pop out with a BFH and big C-clamp. I wasn't able to on my Tahoe though, I had to take it to a place and have them pressed out.

unless its 1/4 thick, i don't know if it would survive a cleaning. the rust is very deep. like i said, the picture doesn't do it much justice.

my question about the joints was, are they the nylon-injected or the ones with the clips? how can i tell?

i would pull that cover off and clean it and paint the outside with rustolium or something to keep it from getting worse. its really just for easy access to your gears and to keep in fluids.. BUT it needs to be strong enough to protect the gears. so if its rusted thin i would replace it because if you run over something and your cover caves in or cracks you could end up having to replace your gears

and im guessing those are nylon injected because i have seen some with those "C" clips and i dont see them on yours but dont quote me its just an educated guess :D

Sand or wire wheel the hell out of it, if it looks questionable at all, just replace it...it's not worth saving $35.00 to keep the old one.

LOL That rust nothing. Replace it if you want but you are wasting money.

Those are the stock nylon injected setup. After market stuff will have clips.

if the pumpkin cover is going to worry you, replace it. Your better safe then sorry. replace the fluid and gasket and shell be ready to go.

As for the U-Joints, make sure you brad one with a grease fitting on it, then you can always service it. I bought one with the fitting and lifetime warranty for 15bucks.

your truck seems pretty clean underneath tho!

lol ok- lots of opinions on the cover, which is cool, but one vote for the nylon u-joints.

i have another car, so i can take the diff cover off and if it looks too far gone, i can get around till i get another. Atomic- the truck is in AZ. i think it came from OR or WA, but for the most part, the working end of it is pretty clean.

replaced the transfer case seal and came across an issue. the case seems to be leaking from somewhere low. and a lot. at $15/quart, i don't want to keep dumping fluid into it. it leaks the most when the truck is actually moving, but stops when parked. my son says it appears to be coming from the drain bolt and (i am probably wrong), but i thought i read somewhere the bolt needs to be teflon/nylon taped. s/m doesn't mention it. it looks to me like the fluid is coming from the case halves, but without seeing the fluid drop myself, i cannot say for sure. opinions on that?
