Hey guys, my old faithful 2003 Yukon (4.8L) with 160K miles on it is giving me a P0220 code (and only this code). I searched and all the other threads I found have several codes along with this one, so I'm now sure how much they apply. The code only comes on when I start the car, and it only happens say once every 10-20 times I start the car. Once I clear the code it runs like normal. I inspected the wires to the TPS, and they look fine. I wiggled them while it was running and no effect. I cleaned out the TB. Code still comes up infrequently. Should I just replace the TPS? Should I replace the whole throttle body (is there anything else there that just a new TPS won't fix?). I've heard bad grounds could cause a P0220, but I'd think I would have more problems if that were the case, no? Thanks for any help!

Have you checked your Accelerator Position Sensor? The TPS and the APS are closely linked and a mismatch between the two can throw that code.

Well I took a quick look at the APS (or at least what I think is the APS) before I decided that it probably wasn't the problem. All I noticed at first glance was that the wiring harness was out of its plastic guides. Everything else looked ok and undamaged. But if the APS can cause a P0220, then I'll go take a closer look tomorrow. Anything I should look at specifically?

If you have a scan tool that can read Accelerator Position and Throttle Position, you might see if the accelerator position reading changes in sync with you pressing on the accelerator. Also, you can maybe see if the throttle position follows properly.

It's easier to see flat spots or dropouts if your scanner will graph the TPS or APS(or PPS) PID, or ideally both at the same time. I can graph mine with the Torque Pro app on my tablet or phone, and a OBD bluetooth dongle (OBD Link MX+). But watching the numbers carefully should show defects.

Is the $20 BAFX OBD bluetooth dongle good enough? Yours's is obviously nicer, but is $100 more. At the end of the day, if they all do the same thing, I'll take my chances with the cheap one for how often I'll need to use it.

Don't have to spend a ton of money, but you will find that scan tools get used more and more as a vehicle gets older. I have been keeping mine in the center console, just in case a code pops up on the road. It is nice to find out if something is serious and requires a tow or not. I would hate to use a AAA tow for something silly, like an O2 sensor something I could drive home on. Bluetooth scanners can get you the basics (sometimes a little more). You may want to upgrade in the future, if you find yourself using the scan tool more frequently.

Ok, I took a look in the throttle body and the plate is loose and wobbly. Like the two screws are loose, but they are tight as I can get them. Is this normal? I feel like maybe this could be the issue, no?
