True, but if a dealer officially submitted your order to GM with one of their allocations, and it just so happens something you ordered is on constraint (which is why GM didn’t accept the order)….the dealer is losing out by not ordering something else that’s not on constraint that they could actually get accepted and sell….

So it works both ways.

I think it’s crazy you can actually custom order a car where there is a refundable deposit and you can backout whenever. And do it at multiple dealerships

But if it’s non-refundable- I agree there should be some sort of stipulation that allows a customer to cancel and get A refund, Like for example the order is never accepted by GM after X amount of time
Does a dealer only submit orders if they have allocation? It seems there's lots of people that have order numbers that then sit at 1100 status. I'm assuming if they know they are at 1100 status, then that means they have a valid order number? If the dealer knew it would sit at 1100 indefinitely, then why submit the order and use the allocation?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this allocation process and if allocations come first (dealer submits orders with given allocation) or if the order is submitted and then if GM accepts it, they give allocation to the dealer to build that order.

I don't know the process entirely for a 100% correct answer to be honest.

However the constraint list changes weekly. So maybe what is on constraint today may not be next week....but if the dealer never submits your order and they do not have an allocation next week, then you're getting screwed.

I also think some dealers even get an allocation of things on constraint - that's where I get confused lol

I feel like this guy does a pretty good job of explaining the constraint/allocation process, but where he loses me a bit is with the ordering process. If a dealer submits the order he then says "the dealer gets allocation for that specific order." So does that mean when an order is submitted GM sees it, accepts it and then sends allocation to the selling dealer?

he threw me off at the end when he said …”it has a better chance of getting accepted”.

He made it seem like the entire time if a dealer has an allocation, and if I your order has nothin on constraint or if they happen to have an allocation with something on constraint…your order will be accepted immediately by GM.

But I don’t see that being the case with everything I’m reading on here. And then that last tidbit of”better chance”….I don’t get it

Exactly - there's parts of it that make sense. Dealers are given "consensus" every couple of weeks - got it. Constraints can only be ordered if a dealer has an allocation for it - got it. But why do you have "chance" that your order will get picked up? It seems like from everything I've read - A)Dealer gets allocations B)Dealer looks at customer orders C)Dealer submits orders that match allocations they are given. Evidently it doesn't work quite like that so I'm trying to put the other pieces of the puzzle together and this guy sort of helped and sort of added more confusion.

I have a 100% constraint free and basic order. Yukon XL SLE 9-Seater w/ Duramax. That's it. I guess we'll see if that gives me a "better chance" to have my order picked up - haha.

Yeah I’m puzzled too

Also…when he spoke about consensus he made it seem like it’s an estimate the dealer gets for what allocations they’re projected to get for the rest of the year (or maybe next 12 months since they get them often)

But that may not be very helpful if their allocations are not consistent month for month.
For example they may get a consensus of 60 LTs for a year, but it doesn’t mean they’ll get allocations 5 a month…maybe some months they only get a few and others they’ll get a dozen
