For anyone looking for remote start options for a 2021 PPV, I was told by a dealership nearby that the only solution is an aftermarket platform, and the choices are limited. Consistently I was told the CompuStar 900-AS universal module was “the best choice” given its flexibility; they paired it with the 1WR3R remote (the Chevy fob also works, with three pushes of the lock button).
Here’s my experience so far:
- the starter works, which has been a win for the recent single-digit MO mornings
- both remote options - the Compustar fob and the factory Chevy fob - work equally well to initiate the starter
- hazard lights flash continuously, which apparently is a known “thing” for this install but wasn’t shared with me prior to install
- the hazards randomly come on when the vehicle is put in D, when the remote starter was not used
- turning off the continuous hazards requires either foot on brake, or shifting to a gear other than P
- sometimes, when the remote starter has been used, putting a foot on the brake pedal will kill the motor
- unlike other vehicles currently in the family fleet, or previously owned, there aren’t settings tied to the starter for temp or other features (my F150 keyed in on outside temp and adjusted inside temp and heated seats and steering wheel accordingly). This means I have to be mindful of the setting when I exit the vehicle so that they’re set right for the next start (ie, temp higher/lower, fan speed higher/lower, and whatever vents needed are engaged)
Some of the issues above, I believe, are in the install and not the interface with the vehicle but some others probably are. I’ll be taking the vehicle to the installer soon to demo my issues and have them troubleshoot. Apparently the hazards are required in programming, for the visual confirmation the starter fired, but can be programmed out. I’ll likely do that - the sound of the running motor and the side marker lights are a dead giveaway the starter fired!
So, my experience has been mostly positive but not without frustrations. I believe the dealership aftermarket sales guy knew about the hazards being on continuously when he sold me the install but didn’t tell me until asked - he responded super-fast to my question about it, in a way only experience with the issue would provide an answer that quickly. Do I want to see some of the pain points resolved? 100%. Am I going to pull the system out and get money back if they aren’t? 0%. Even with the visual ICK’s, I’d still rather have a warm vehicle on a frigid winter morning!
I’ll keep anyone reading this posted on what I learn from the installer.
