So you’re saying our trucks can be started with a bit of bailing wire? I don’t think so. You must have had all the tumblers except one stuck open.

No...they were all closed. I’m sure of that. Yukon’s have a security feature that requires the key to be close to the ignition to be able to start. When I had the cylinder out I tried starting it with a screw driver and I couldn’t unless I put the key right up against the security device. Don’t worry...nobody will be able to steal your truck by this method! I just needed to be able to push all the tumblers to unlock it so I could remove it to correct the problem.

My 02 doesn’t have a security key. I still highly doubt you can turn the cylinder with a piece of twisted wire unless that cylinder is defective. What kind of a cylinder would be that easy to defeat? Go try it now that it’s in and functioning normally and report back.

I’ll give it a try later and I’ll take a short video showing it. I’m believing that I can do it again. If only I were a bettin’ man...;)

or maybe I’ll end up doing this again...

Fun thread lol

Called it bailing wire here as well.
I recently foumd this "aircraft safety wire" on amazon, stainless steel and many choices for thickness.
Also comes in a nice little blue plastic dispenser.

I keep a couple rolls in my tool box, two different thicknesses.

And your supposed to have the cylinder unlocked in order to remove it right?

Either something is not quite right with that cylinder or your little wire loop was just stupid lucky.

Put that loop in your pocket and get a lottery ticket asap!!

A few years ago i took a crash course in home security, wanted to understand how, etc.
Took me down the road of what makes a good lock vs a cheap lock.

Lock picking / lock sport opened my eyes.

Shocking how easy it can be.

I now teach people the basics, usually accompanied with drinking games.
I call it a "man skill" :D

:Angry:Well...maybe Just Fishing would be better at this than I as I gave it a try again tonight and came close, but failed. Here’s what the cylinder looks like without the key in it:

The left side is up and locked. Here’s it with the key in (left side goes flush thereby unlocking it):

And here’s my failed attempt:

I got close, but it didn’t work. I wish I had my original tie wire to try again as I had to cut a couple new pieces tonight.

I must have gotten really lucky (this is as close to winning the lottery as I’ll get) or like you guys said something must of been wrong so that I could turn it in order to remove it. When I originally got the cylinder stuck in the steering column my key wouldn’t turn the cylinder either way.

I dunno...time to play video games...

I think your key had released the tumblers except maybe one and they were still in the released position due to you turning the cylinder partially and the wire pushed up on the last one. Which would make sense since you read one number wrong so one tumbler wasn’t set right and the key wouldn’t work on that one.
