I wish I had take a few more picks of the process now...

I had taken my luggage rack off my truck to paint it. In the process of doing so, I broke off some of the bolts in nuts that are affixed to the roof.
In a drunken idea, I thought I would drill out the rusty holes to a large hole size and use a tap and die set to be able to use little bit larger bolts.
Seemed to be working ok, until I broke the tap in one of the nuts... Uhg

I tried using a bolt remover.. No dice. Those dont seem to work at all.

I lucked out in finding a thread where someone else was replacing the parts for their luggage rack. Sorry no link

However I do have the links of where to purchase the parts

99 Tahoe

Blazer, C1500, C2500, C3500, Escalade, K1500, K2500, K3500, Tahoe, Yukon

Tahoe 1999 This one you can use the diagram for the 99 Tahoe above to order the same parts.

I used a chisel and hammer to remove the old rivet nuts from the roof. Only one whole was messed up due to attempting to remove the stuck bolt. However I think because of where it is, I may still be able to use it... Just need to be able to hold the rivet nut while putting in the bolt. Not easy...

Here is an image of the holes where the rivet nuts go to hold the pillars of the luggage rack.

Here is an image of the rivet nuts. GM changed the part#. The nut on the bottom is missing the beveled top because it was chiseled off. Its blown out I suppose cause the bolt did not go in straight. This does not leave me with much hope of adding a basket on my roof.

Lucky for me, I only needed to replace a couple things from damage of attempting to get this thing off. I did consider throwing everything away. Glad I did not, these are hard to find and expensive to replace.
Here are my side rails which I am still painting.

Cross rails. I know blurry.

I really need to get back to painting

I am currently waiting on part #7 in the diagram above, I also ordered 16, 17 to replace the rusty ones I have. might as well.
I ordered more of part #11 in case I screw some up, and since the bolts #13 I recieved are longer than what GM installed I ordered some more from GM parts Giant to see if I get something different.

what part of the rivnut did you chisle/hammer to to get it off?

I'm helping a buddy with the roof rack on his jeep overland which he screwed up 2 of the rivnuts while swapping the roofrack on/off so many times while doing more stuff to it. The 2 rivnuts just spin in the roof now.

I chiseled flat with the roof, and at the base of what you see on the roof. Chisel softly and around the top of the nut, the base will fall into the skeleton of the body.

Chances are where the nuts are spining, the octagnal hole like mine is now round I still have not gotten to putting mine back on as of yet. But will be soon.

I have all the parts I need, just need to finish painting.
