roof rack awning?

yeah i know they make them but i'm wondering if anyone has made one on their own. i love going to the beach and taking my tahoe. we usually need to vehicles so we can setup a tarp between them for shade but i'd really love to have some sort of system that i can use with just my tahoe. any plans, ideas, suggestions?

Good thinking! You could probably throw a tarp up there easily with a few straps to the truck and then 2 tent poles and guy lines for the other end. Might do this next time I am camping

i've been wondering the same too. more for camping tho. i saw it done on a h3 hummer once and thought it was a sweet idea. the tarp section rolled up and then 2 tent pole like poles folded in from the sides on the back of the roof rack.

If it were me, i'd use a Heavy Canvas build it.

i'm thinking of making something out of pvc. maybe a frame with some eye bolts through it where i can attach the tarp with carabiners. the frame would come apart so that it can be transported. then maybe drill holes through the pvc and the three way connectors and elbow connectors where they attach so i can secure them with some sort of pin. then use two tent poles or pvc pipes hold up the frame secured with guy lines. the other end of the frame would attach to the roof rack. that's where i'd have to figure out how to attach it to the roof rack and how to make that pipe more rigid. maybe i can cap it and fill it with sand?
