Well I just called the shop back to see if they could run the exhaust back pressure test. He said they would be happy to run the test if I REALLY wanted them to but he also gave me a solid 10 minute explanation of why the coils (Or possibly the wires) are most likely the problem. He also mentioned that he had been doing it for 35 years and my truck didn't have all the classic symptoms of a clogged exhaust. Looks like I'll be starting with the coils.

I love now he said “most likely”. Sounds like he got butthurt when you questioned his diagnosis. I would have him run the damn test. At least that way you’ll know for sure. I hate it when a mechanic tries to keep from running a diagnostic that the customer wants done. Makes me question them even more. It’s up to you if you want it done- you’re the customer. Don’t let him intimidate you. He could have run the test in the 10 minutes it took to talk you out of it.

Yeah I think he was a little too. I was as polite as I could be when I asked him to run the test without sounding like I didn't trust his diagnosis. He also told me he wasn't very busy so it's not like he had other tasks that were piling up.
I hate when they do that too. I don't like having to take my vehicles to a shop in the first place so I just want everything checked at once to minimize trips.

Too many mechanics have huge egos and don’t think anybody who doesn’t do it for a living have a clue, we’re all idiots and should bow to their superiority. My favorite (and last time I asked a shop to work on one of my trucks) was when I had just installed my blower the third time due to Whipple not including the right instructions, and it was a ***** every time due to how they designed it and some of the bolts were almost impossible to get to. I wanted to swap cams and I knew it could be done without pulling the heads by spinning the cam a few times until the lifters were popped up in the trays and then inserting rods through the oil galley holes in the front of the block so they couldn’t fall. 3 different shops told me no way, the blower and heads had to come off. That’s how the book shows it. I explained how it’s done, offered to show them articles or videos, they said it can’t be done. Acted like I was an idiot, like I had no clue. They wanted to school me on why it can’t be done like that. The last shop was close to my house, and I told them, fine- I’ll do it myself. He said let me know when I needed a tow to his shop. A week later I stopped by and let him listen to my truck after the cam was in. He still didn’t believe I’d done it like I said. *******.
