I need a nudge, or a good shove on which way to go. I know a bit about them both but obviously not enough to make a decision yet lol. I thought about getting a car but want to put the money into the hoe. But, I hate being on the highway doing 80 and not being able to really get up and go. Which is "better", is it possible/cost effective to do both? Thanks guys!

This can get into a very large discussion. I have built both in 1000+ RWHP applications. I really will boil down to how deep your pockets are and how mechanically inclined you are.

That said, a JY turbo can be fabbed for less than 200 if you shop in the right places, do your own piping, and not give a shit how it looks. Pick the wrong turbo, and you will have lag issues from hell. Or you could spend thousands on both turbo and SC application.

As for doing both, why?

Super have instant power but they are limited to engine rpms because they are belt driven. They will Plateau in higher rpms where a turbo will keep building
Turbos build up boost by the exhaust gas passing through the turbines. They take time to build boost and the bigger the turbo the more Lag there is. However, turbos will overcome sc in the higher rpms because they worked by the exhaust and not the engine.

There are people out there who have a dual charger setup, but that requires tremendous amount of Engine work. Its gonna need really stronger internals and dont forget the amount of Beating the trans will go through. Its not worth the Money and i dont think it practical for every day use

I had a custom supercharger on a car and absolutely loved it. The whine sound it makes is just awesome. Personally i think if its for you hoe, i think sc is the way to go. Better take offs from stops. When cruising at 80 your like 2500 - 3000 rpms thats where the sc is the most responsive, when you punch it it will take off.

If you keep the boost low you can run it without a intercooler without problems. Talking about 4-8 psi Max.

JB: I asked about doing both because I have heard of it before and was wondering why.

Sumo: You describe exactly what I want and answered a question I had. I didnt know if the SC would work going at that speed, but it is good to know it goes off of RPM.

Just gotta figure out which one I want to get. Time for some more research.

As for being mechanically inclined. I would like to do the work myself, and can usually figure things out. If I got it and decided I couldnt I would have to look into how much it would cost for a shop to do.

Thanks guys!

Question: what do you want the boost for?

Personal opinion: We have superchargers on our personal vehicles for two big reasons, they are HEAVY and DDs. I wanted the quick off the line get up and go, ease for merging in traffic, reliable, and good MPGs. I didn't need something for the track (rarely do I go above 85MPH), so I wanted my power down low.

I LOVED the Radix 112 on my 5.3L Tahoe, that thing was a beast. Coupled with the right cam, she would scoot.

The TBSS (TVS1900) and SSS (TVS2300) are downright nasty with boost, granted they have larger engines (hence the larger blowers).

Were we to put something on the WS6, it probably would have been a turbo.

Professional opinion: Both superchargers and turbos are fantastic (provided you are buying a quality product), and we have many a customer from both camps. Again, it boils down to that initial question- use.

We currently sell Magnachargers and Vortechs (with other products coming onboard here in the future), and we certainly would not carry something that we would not put on our personal vehicles.

EDIT: There are two primary types of blowers:

Positive displacement: maggie, whipple, vortech, which makes boost immediately

Centrifugal: Like a Procharger, which builds boost as RPM increases

Wow, thanks for all the info Jenna! What you describe in your personal opinion is exactly what I am looking for. I doubt I will go to a track anytime soon. Up in the mountains it would be nice to have an extra boost to get up passes and such. I just don't want too much boost were I would have to do a ton of engine work. I am fine with a bit but don't think a lot would be practical for my situation.

With what you guys are selling now, what would you recommend? I can shoot you an email too if that is best.

Thanks for all the great info!

The amount of boost available will largely be determined in your modifications, as well as tuning. The stock pulley on the Radix112 on my 5.3L was ~6lbs I believe, and it was a definite bump in HP. I eventually pullied down to a 2.9" pulley and was making a little over 11lbs (overkill for most setups).

If you aren't wanting anything too crazy, I would go with the stock pulley (I think was a 3.5" on the Radix) and then decide from there if you want more boost. Either way, you will have a smile on your face.

To be honest, right now, we can get a fantastic deal on a Radix 112, and it would be more than plenty for your engine. They retail at $4800, just to give you a ball park.

If you are interested on our prices, give me a shout at [email protected].

Here are some clips of the Tahoe:
