Seat belt light always on

So, I have owned this 96 Yukon Gt 2 door for less than a week now and have been trying to figure out all the issues with intermittent switches and worn parts. Many replacements items on the way from Rockauto and Amazon. The one thing that has me a bit stumped is the the seat belt light. It is always on. Meaning engine off, key out of the ignition...the light is still on. Truck running, both seat belts buckled...light still on. I got tired of it being on so I started pulling fuses to see which fuse would allow it to loose power. I tried the obvious ones and the light stayed on. Finally I pull the STOP/HAZ fuse and the light goes off.

Anyone have any insight to why this would be associated with the Stop/Haz circuit?

I am still looking for a good set of electrical diagrams and have to figure out why I don't have power going to the dome lights but I can drive the truck without dome lights...for now. But I can't drive it without the brake lights and that seat belt light is very bright and annoying...

Did you look under the seats to see if the seat belt light plug is plugged in?

Yes I did. I tried unplugging it, cleaning the contact with some spray contact cleaner, and then plugging it back in. Nothing changed. I would understand there being a fault in the circuit and the light staying on when the key in on, but with the key off and removed, the light stay on???

assuming the seat belt wire just requires a ground and then the light continues to stay lit then it may be a instrument cluster problem., just having it stay lit with the key out points me to a bad cluster.

Looks like they skipped 1996, though. eBay probably has listings for paper copies.

Alldatadiy.com would be a good option or substitute since most of their information seems to be copied from the factory manual.

Here is what I see for a 1998. Fine print- no guarantee that it’s the same for 96 but it’s probably close enough.

It looks like the seatbelt switch is normally open, providing a ground through the door chime alarm module to the cluster. GM’s diagnostic is fairly simple...unplug the door chime box from the convenience center and see what happens. If the light stays on, it’s a short to the cluster or a bad cluster. If the light goes off, it’s a bad door alarm module.

Thanks for the input. I also went to Hatzie in the 67-72Chevytrucks forum to look for wire schematics and saw that 96 was blank. Thanks for these sheets. I will do a little more testing later this week when I can get back out to the barn.

So after spending several hours to confirm...the "Audio Alarm Module" is bad. Thank you again for the service manual info. Now the question is, if I leave the module removed, what does this effect negatively? Or does anyone know where to get replacements other than a junk yard?

A lot of people just remove it so that they don’t have the door chime, so there shouldn’t be any drivability issues.

I picked up a Corvette one on eBay, not as annoying. Just look for similar looking ones, should be fine.
