I have a 99' 2-door, it came with the "tow package" with the oem external trans cooler. I purchased an aftermarket external trans cooler with the plans to replace this oem one. But was wondering if anyone added another trans cooler in addition to the factory one.

The trans goes into the radiator, then to the cooler, then back to the trans.

I was just thinking of adding a second cooler into this loop?

Has anyone done this, and does the trans have enough pressure to accomplish this? I'm being told it does, but why would I do it. I'm looking for lower tranny temps, and do not want to by-pass the factory radiator portion.

Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

thank you

I'm no expert in this area, but I think that what you are proposing would work.

But, other members of this Forum much more knowledgeable than me in this area will chime in.

The Hayden 678/679 are pretty common upgrades. No need to add a second auxiliary cooler, just replace your factory one. Probably don't want to run a larger unit, because in cold weather, may not allow ATF fluid to warm up. That's probably only in the very cold northern states though.

There's no issues with pressure drop caused by adding a larger auxiliary cooler.

Not sure about your model year but for the later models most of us just replace the factory cooler mounted in front of the radiator with an upgraded/ bigger one like a TruCool 40k. There isn’t really another location to add a second one plus you’re talking additional leak points by adding more lines and fittings.

Do you have a transmission temperature gauge? Are you towing and want more cooling for that reason? What are you towing with a Tahoe that would cause the transmission to overheat?
