This exact thing happened to me on my 98 two weeks ago. This is what was wrong ... the hose at the bottom of the plastic recovery tank was clogged so no back and forward flow of water from the radiator ... so I fixed the clog (that was mega easy to fix ) ... but that didnt fix it ... I took out the old thermosat and replaced it (super easy ... no gasket ..comes with an o ring) fixed it and it runs cooler than ever.
