I have a 1999 Chevy Tahoe LS 5.7. She's a runner but last week my serpentine belt started to chirp and make noises. I replaced the belt, idler and tensioner pulley. It's still screaming and worse than before. I took the belt off and and wiggled the pulleys. None of them had play. My alternator pulley did sqeek though when I turned it. I'm not sure what I should replace next. Please help.....

if you had this truck a while and it just started then i would suspect the squeaky alt first. it should not squeak at all. maybe have a parts store bench test it to see if it squeaks on their machine. when it does make noise look at each pulley carefully and see if it looks like the belt is jumping or shifting on each one. just don't stick you digits in there while running.

I'm not sure if I overtightened the idler pulley but the belt is for sure jumping. I can see this near the ALT but I'm not sure. I will go get a new alternator today and let you know

note the when you tighten an idler you only are tightening the inner bearing race which is very hard to even hurt a bit. the actual idler is on the outer bearing race. the hardware that bolts it down does not effect the outer race so either the bearing would have to be be or the pulley would have to be damaged if a idler was to be at fault.

make sure the stuff below is matching your vehicle parts and are properly fitted. note there are separate sub section if you have a higher amp alt then 105 amps.

also since i can't remember make sure the idler is not set up to be mounted the other way around. can't recall if it was designed that way.

Today I replaced the alternator and serpentine belt. The belt was an inch too big. I also took off the idler pulley and cleaned it up. Everything is working great now. The only thing I see is the idler pulley has a slight wobble. I tightened it down to manufacture specs and it doesn't have play. I think the washer in the front is no longer flush with the idler. I'll go tomorrow to try to find a new washer and see what that does.
