My 03 Tahoe with 174XXX miles. the display says service 4wd. It did the same thing last year and i added gear oil to the front diff and that settled it down. It is doing it again and i added oil again and has not made a diffrence yet.( added it yesteday) It also does not want to stay in 2 wd. It keeps putting itself in auto 4wd. :emotions122: Any ideas?

Also, the parking brake went boing the other day now i have no parking brake. the cable appears to be ok, and appears to be attached @ both ends, but it does have a lot of slack, but not enough adjustmet to remove the slack. again any ideas

thanks

Eric

Sounds like your 4WD selector switch is bad... common problem
$30 part from rock auto and a 10min swap to fix

As for the parking break have you redone your brakes lately? If so you have to adjust the parking break... If not there could be a few things wrong. If you are a DIY guy you can do some more looking or just take it to a shop and they can check it out.

Have it check for codes on the transfer case, most likely C0306 shorted encoder motor on the t/case..Time for a new or rebuilt one!!!LMK I have a few!
Needs new parking brake shoes, thats just for the parking brake nothing to do with the regular brake system.

Last year when it did the same thing, i took it to the local dealer and they wanted $100 just to have their computer talkt to it, no repairs etc. Is there an easy way to check the selector buttons?

encoder motor, what and where is that and how hard is it to check. how expensive are they. Im not a nube, but not a master eather Ok i see what the encoder is now:) had to look it up

As for the parking break, have not done any break work lately. I plan to chcek the breaks this week end just to make sure notheint let go back there.

thanks for the imput so far

Mine gave the service 4wd message, and the code for the encoder sensor/motor. I bought a new encoder motor, but it hasn't acted up since. I guess I'll just hold on to the part and see if it happens again!

The encoder/actuator motor is located on the transfer case right above the front driveshaft, drive shaft removal required for access, also the make a delco rebuilt for $240.00 or so!! and a GM rebuilt for about $400.00!!!
If is working now dont worry is not really a part that breaks often!!!
Good Luck!!!
