The airbag light is usually one of the front impact sensors. An advanced scan tool can tell you which one. Otherwise, replace one. If you get the right one, the light will go away on its own. If not, switch the one you took out with the other side.
As for the steering wheel, is there an aftermarket stereo?

Do you have a big system? My steering wheel buttons don't work because I opted out of using a module for the OnStar and my subs will turn the airbag light on, but it goes away when I turn the truck off.

Equals = busted clockspring inside the steering wheel.
Replace clockspring.

Does the horn work?
It would be a good idea to have the airbag codes read to see which circuit is the problem.
