The answer is no. You do not need to put in "service brake mode" to do front brakes.

FYI I always did my own brakes never someone else and iam quite aware of how the braking system works.

changed the fronts yesterday, did not put it in service mode, but did disconnect battery. before i re connected the battery i pumped the pedal many times. Truck started up normally no codes. i do need to figure out how to reset the pad life though. New sensor was installed
