Following this post as well as I'm in the NoVA area myself.
How about driveline/axle shops? I have the whine in the driveline that points to either the front or rear differential. The only problem is I don't know who to take it to for an honest, competent diagnosis and rebuild if necessary.
I lived in Gaithersburg, Maryland for a couple of years and had some rear end work done on my Trailblazer where I had a G80 transplanted into the rear end to replace an open differential and was very happy with the work. I'll have to try to find the receipt so I can recommend the shop to the D.C. area residents.
I'm hoping to find something similar in the NoVA area to save me from going to MD.
