So I wasn't planning on spending this much money on something right now, but this looks like a sweet deal to me.

So here's my question, should I get it? I was planning on eventually swapping a Detriot TrueTrac into my 10-bolt rear, but would this be a better way to go?

Anyone know where to look for an identifying number for what gears are in it? I know that they changed from 90-93. Also, does anyone know if a TrueTrac is available for this rear end, or is this good enough to rebuild and just leave the way it is?

look like a regular 8.5" ring gear axle. true trac should be available for it. As for gears see if you see what looks to be like a gear ratio stamped on a tag or the diffy itself.

From my understanding, the 454 SS axles were a 9.5" ring. Is that right?

I know a truetrac is a good way to go for the 10-bolt, but are these 14 sf rear ends strong enough to do without the upgrade, or is it still a good idea to go with a truetrac?

Let's say I should go with a truetrac for either rear end, would there be an advantage to a 14-bolt vs. the 10-bolt?

That's a semi float 14 bolt, 9.5" ring gear. I couldn't tell you the gear ratio though, you'd have to dig around on gmt400. They are a stronger than a 10 bolt rear.

If you think you might put it one day, go ahead and buy it. Those usually don't pop up for sale very often.

Looks like 4.10 gears, so I'll be swapping those for 3.73's.

I have a couple questions, though. Probably stupid, but I just wanted to be sure.

First, is there anything I should look for that would be a reason not to get it? Obviously significant damage or something, but if the diff gears are bad, it can just be rebuilt, right?

Second, would this change my load rating or towing rating at all? I can't imagine that it would be weaker than a 10-bolt from a half-ton truck, just wanting to be sure. If anything, it seems like it would probably increase the load rating due to the beefier axle shafts and stuff.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to look at it tomorrow, he said he'd take $250, so I'm pretty sure I'll be getting it. And that will be my last major purchase this year. lol.

Diffy can be rebuilt with individual parts. Your towing pull capacity would be altered just by changing ratios. And your load capacity would still be limited by frame strength and spring packs.

I would agree the axle will not change your towing or weight rating.
Lower gears can raise the towing rating.
However a lot of people buy a 1/2 ton and try to make it a 3/4 or 1 ton. Does not matter what you do, it cannot be done.
Springs, trans, axle, etc... You still have a 1/2 ton frame. You will always have a limiting factor.
That is a strong axle and better then the 10 bolt so if you have not and can get it.

Yeah, I'm not looking to upgrade it to a 3/4 ton or anything, I just wanted to be sure that my current specs wouldn't go down at all.

I already got it, picked it up yesterday. I need to get it out of the back, but this thing is HEAVY!!!!

Then I'll start the process of cleaning it up and finding out what else I need for it, like the u-joint converter.
