Dude I am going through the same thing, I took mine off and the paint underneath is trashed, so I am debating putting them back on....

I stripped the chrome off if them and painted it black....

True... You never know what's gonna happen when you go to pull them off.

I say take them off but as stated there is always the risk of what is underneath and they don't look that bad. I still think they would look better off though.

i found that the pass doors had been hit i can see the body filler
and chipping paint when i pulled mine off but i was replacing

them with new ones.no more faded chrome on the top of the trim
