Smell gas fumes by filler cap

I have noticed the smell of gas by the left rear of our 2007 Tahoe 5.3. There are no codes being thrown. Sometimes it takes a few extra turns of the starter to get it to run, but not always. No evidence of gas leaks that I can see, or on the ground. Any ideas?

maybe some spilled other wise you would have a CEL for a small leak i.e P0442

The smell of gas could be coming from the fuel pump ring, they rust out and leak. If you are having to turn the ignition several times for the rig to start that's a tell tale that the fuel pump needs to be replaced. How many miles are on the rig?

@89Suburban had the same deal with smelling fuel for a while. He discovered he had a leak on top of his tank.

The smell of gas could be coming from the fuel pump ring, they rust out and leak. If you are having to turn the ignition several times for the rig to start that's a tell tale that the fuel pump needs to be replaced. How many miles are on the rig?

It has about 115,000 on it. We live in Indiana so they do throw salt down. I have no rust showing on the body panels and keep it washed underneath. Certainly there could be rust on the top of the tank.

Next time you fill up get underneath the rig and stick your hand on top of the tank towards the rear and feel for a wet spot.

i'm surprised because this system is sensitive enough for a slight worn out gas cap that would trigger a CEL P0442
