Last week I had a belt on the ac unit replaced because it was slipping. Now if the air is running for more than a minute or two the ac under the hood starts to smoke and it smells like burnt plastic. Haven't really had time to check it out, but I figured I could save time by asking you all what it might be, if it's related to replacing the belt, etc.

I'd say instead of your belt slipping your compressor or clutch was seizing causing the belt to squeal. now that you have replaced the belt the compressor or clutch bind is still doing the same thing only now its burning up a new belt hence the smoke and smell..time for an a/c service..
