I found an old 2715 superchips tuner at work a month ago we arent even a chevy dealer and it would work perfect for my hoe except its vin locked... i could pay 100 dollars to get the update and clear the vin thru superchips but i dont know if its worth it ... what do you guys think? the only reason i want a tune is because of better mpg's and posibly some performance i was planning on doing the 87 tune... any one have any sugestions ? how much is a bbtune?

IMO thats a waste of time. I can make you a chip if you want to waste 100$

Get a black bear mail order tune or equivalent. You need a real tune, not something fake like superchips or a resistor or some crap to plug in. You money is best spend on a Mailorder, Street tune, or Dyno tune. They range from 200$ all the way to 600$ full dyno with street tune afterwards to optimize the feel.

the superchips tuner isn't just a "Resistor" or a "chip"
it is a handheald "tuner"

it still flashes the memory (similar to BBtune (ls1edit) or HPTuners)
it's just in a handheald (like a Diablo) that's alot easier for the average user

as far as the origional question.
$100 for the tuner sounds pretty good (it would cost that much to buy the credits to add another vehicle to my HPTuners suite)

but if you don't mind spending a little more,
a full on "Custom Tune" like BB will give you better gains

you could always unlock it,
and sell it to someone who can't afford a full tune

ok so its somewhat better. I know those handheld tuners work wonders on dodges etc. But still its a cookie cutter type of deal, even though you can enter certain parameters. I guess that sorta thing is good for a tire swap or something. For the MPG gains the original poster is wanting, I highly suggest a dyno tune.

I have a Blackbear tune . I cannot say enough good things about it. I did the live or "in-person" tune at one of the tuning meets. He was in New Orleans this past Feb, and I had him do my truck. The cost is $250 for a live tune, but its well worth it. He also gives you free tune updates for life (as long as its the same truck and has the same engine). So say you change up your exhaust or add a cam or something in the future, he can update your tune to work better with those mods, and he wont charge you anything. I'd say get a Blackbear hands down. I researched a LOT before getting my tune. I searched the internet high and low. I found good and bad comments about the handheld tuners and the chips. But I have yet to find or hear one single negative thing about blackbear. Go search for yourself and see if you can find one single person that regrets getting a Blackbear tune.

i want to get a tune also. been saving up. So i guess you could get a mail order, then if he comes to a town near you, you could meet him back up and get it tuned in person, right? The mail order thing is what kind of scares me. I know blackbear has a excellent following, ive been searching it also, but how do you tune a truck through mail ordering? I think i read they send you a tuner sort of item? Just wondering..

Mail order is a bit different than a "in-person" tune. You can do a mail order one of two ways. You can tell him what all mods you have on your truck, or if its all stock, explain what you expect from the tune (more MPG, better acceleration, etc.) and he can just write a tune for you based on that. OR..you can do a data logging tune. He will ship you a "black box" that you plug into you diagnostic port under the dash and it records all your engine parameters, HP, etc. It will also take note of your driving style as well. You then ship that back to him and he takes that info and writes you a tune for your truck. I think you need a laptop as well to do the data-logging tune. You also have to pay a deposit for the "black box" he sends you which he will refund once he gets the box back from you. Go look at blackbearperformance.com and it explains the process.
