Hey there,
When I get to about 3000 rpm it sounds like I have a supercharger. It's a loud whining in sync with the rpm's. I also have oversteer at highway speeds. I've replaced the sensor on the steering colum which helped a little but it's still too sensitive. Could the EVO on the power steering pump be going out/bad causing the pump to operate at full psi and straining it at the higher rpm's? I've searched the forums and haven't found any correlation between the EVO and a whining noise. Usually whining is a bad bad thing!! Is there a way to tell if the pump is going bad? I'm not sure how easily the pump should turn by hand with the belt off? Any suggestions or ideas

It looks like the original water pump but I haven't had any cooling issues so I don't think that's the issue. Even with the water pump I'm not sure how easy it is to turn with the belt off. AC, belt tensioner, and alternator are new and I can't really think what else would cause the whining. I'm leaning towards the power steering due to the sensitivity, but that could just be coincidenatal.

thanks

If the water pump is starting to go then it will spew coolant from the eye jacket in the pump. Eye jacket is soley there for the purpose of telling you that pump is starting to fail and need to be replaced soon.

Since its at 3000rpms, you can diagnose which pulley it is, our TB bracket. Locate the noise yourself.

No coolant coming from the water pump. It seems to really be noticible under load. I can hear it a little after after the rpm's drop after revving it, but definitely can't hear it with the hood up and my head in the engine compartment. It also seems to be intermittant, but starting to get more consistant and usually when the engine is hot.

Not second guessing you, but are you sure the whining is coming from under the hood?

It really sounds like it's from under the hood, always a chance I coule be wrong. To much engine noise to hear anything at that rpm with the hood open and no way when it's under load. Just baffling me. Guess I'll start throwing some parts at it and see if I can narrow it down.

Try to isolate it when you're driving...front/rear, driver/passenger. I have an issue I've isolated to the rear passenger that way - rolling one window down at at time (still trying to figure out whether it's brakes or something else).

have you checked Ps fluid level? ps pump make a whining noise when low on fluid. Have you had the belt off? If its gone it means that its a accessory that making the noise. Ps, alt, water pump, or ac condenser. depending on how bad the failing component is it could be hard to tell by spinning by hand and other times you can feel it no problems at all.

unknown at this time.
get your self a hearing kit where you can put a microphones mounted in different places to locate the noise. Snap-on sell them. and it comes with four mics. If you are gong to waste money on a longshot waste it on tools.
