Kerosene.... bag o charcoal..... All's we need is some steaks and a good insurance policy!!

...kidding..... good ideas.....
I was thinking along those lines.... Kerosene probably would burn off...

Ya know........ All this discussion about a proper cleaning method.........
Labor-wise???? Since the carpet/padding has to be removed to clean, ..... I can bet the odor still will never go away. Just replace it. ( I do appreciate a budget BTW )

Carpet pressure washed, hot if you can, would be alright. It's the padding you'll never get the smell out of.
You can try AND you may be happy. But! You'll be nose blind at a certain point where others will not.
They will smell it.
I'm in the flooring and demolition business so I know.
