Hi folks, I recently asked a friend if how sometimes this thing nearly chokes (more like gasps) on the startup and was told that it was normal for this rig's age. But later on found that the starter is bran new.. That it must've been replaced per oil leak...
A friend who is mechanic mentioned that I should have the battery load tested whatever that means and that there's high resistance somewhere.. I live in Montana and it's getting to be 0° out at times but I've noticed the start happening when it's 32° after all warmed up and all.
Any ideas? I am trying to learn about my rig so I can keep it running and know how it works because it is simply an awesome ride.

Thanks a lot to everyone for all the help,
hope I can return the favor

Check for weak battery, clean and tight connections and corrosion inside the insulation of the battery cables and clean ground connection. Also, make sure you are not getting coolant in the cylinder and losing coolant at the radiator that could hydraulic the engine.

so after a cold start it idles real rough like its maybe missin ? does it start to run smooth when it warms up ?

its prolly not the battery but if its more then a couple years old just get a new one
ive spent alotta time in a town called big timber montana i know the winters are brutal
i love brutal snowy winters but car batterys usually dont

So all along you were saying how it runs after it starts and not identifying a cranking/starting issue? I give up.

well hes not really clear i mean it sounds like hes referrnig to a starting issue
but the "it chokes" and gasps comment kinda threw me chokes and gasps makes me think the engines already running
then he said something about the mechanic and the battery

Oh I'm talking on the crank it will either jump right up and turn on or it will do an ah...ahh hemmmm before & as it kicks over to start. Talking about the cranking over definitely.
It has idled higher than desired in some more rare mornings while it was in the zero temps but during the nicer 32° temps and before winter even started it does the weird startups. A friend of mine called it a slow start..
Again, runs fine just focussing on startups that are not going smooth. Thanks

No. I was talking specifically about the way it starts up. Not about what it does after. Just the way it starts.

unknown at this time.
have you tried to test or reset the iac?
key on five seconds key off for 10 seconds then finally start it then check for i above normal idle when cold as slowly and smoothly goes down as it gets warm. no jagged rpm changes.
