hello,

i am about to replace my starter in the next few days and i have never done one before and i thought it was a pop out and pop in situation.but i was reading online about replacing the starters and they talk about needing to shim it and other sites say that gm cars and trucks there is no need to shim.has anyone ever replaced a starter on 98 slt Yukon 5.7L.

thanks

Yep. the only time you need to use shims is if the starter and flywheel don't meet up right. 9 times out of 10 you don't need to worry about that so I wouldn't. If you take your old starter off and see shims then just put them on the new one and see how it lines up. It shouldn't take you no more than 15 mins to change out and remember to DISCONNECT YOUR POS SIDE OF BATTERY!!!!

i replaced the starter today.i also replaced the neg and pos battery cables with stock 4 gauge for now.the terminal screws that came with the wires are small so i need to track down some longer screws.but i filmed it starting up.seems to sound just fine. don't mind the mess i still have to finish running the wires.i just hooked it up to test it out.
