steering wheel and steering shaft too loose.

My steering wheel has been loose for 6-7 months now. today i popped the hood and tried rotating the steering shaft with my hand. it was very very easy to turn. is it supposed to be like that ? that thing is pissing me off. i cant steer right. could it be sway bars or maybe a brand new steering shaft needs to be installed ?Thanks in advance for all the replies.

I always hate being told to search so I'll just suggest it for you. Look for "intermediate steering shaft". Plenty of information both somewhere here and over at GMfullsize.com. I'll be replacing mine soon as well.
