Steering wheel buttons for radio not working

Like the title says the controls for the radio on the steering wheel haven't worked since I bought my tahoe. It has a double din touchscreen radio that came with it when I bought it so i'm positive it has something to do with the people that installed it. The DIC buttons work and they are lit up but the radio buttons are not lit up nor do they work. Just wondering where to begin?

any chance you can get a stock radio to throw in there for testing purposes ? Maybe your radio isn't set up for steering wheel controls IDK, just my 2cents worth.

The module necessary to retain steering wheel controls for the aftermarket head unit probably got skipped. I would look into that first to see if it has one or not. I know when I put an aftermarket head unit in I had to buy the module for the controls.

How exactly would I go about checking for this module to see if I have it or not?

Unfortunately I dont have a stock radio to put in to test :/

I'm assuming your door chines still work right? So if those are still working than there should be two modules wired in behind your head unit. The dash bezel will come off fairly easily. I pulled the steering wheel to its lowest position to allow the bezel to come off around the steering column. It's just little plastic clips that hold it to the dash. Carefully separate it from the dash and then that will allow you access to the stereo bezel where the head unit is mounted in the dash. There you will find probably 4 screws that hold the stereo in place. Unscrew those and your headunit should come out from the bezel. Behind is where you will find all your stereo wires and where those two modules should be placed.

The module you are looking for is going to be or similar to the aswc-1 by Metra this is what has to be wired in to the harness to retain steering wheel controls. Pull the dash trim and remove the radio it is held in by 3 7mm bolts the module will be tucked in behind the radio. If not there the module costs bout 50 dollars and you can find it on Amazon or eBay. Hope this helps.

thanks guys for all the help. it would appear as though the module is missing so i guess I'll have to invest into that at a later time. pretty upset with how things looked when i pulled off the dash trim... there are SO many broken plastic pieces and the bracket that holds the light switch is completely gone. i dont know what kind of retard the previous owner had install the radio but they tore up a lot :/ hopefully i can find a tahoe in a junkyard that has some of these broken plastic pieces.

They are pretty easy to find in the junkyards. Just be gentle when you pull on the dash piece if you find one and it should come out easy. On the module, they are around $50 bucks online so not too expensive to order.

Yes junkyards can and will have those pieces, but you have to get to them quickly they go like hotcakes. As for the module you need just the steering wheel one the aswc-1 is between 40 and 50 on ebay or Amazon. There is another module though that does the job of three parts an aftermarket radio needs it is the crux soogm-15 it is about 80, nut like I said does the job of two modules and has the antenna adapter. This module will allow you to keep onstar, and the rise chimes as well as steering wheel controls, and can be found on the same websites.
