Hey guys,
I bought a new black leather OEM steering wheel to replace the fake wood Caddy one and need to swap it. Before I go taking the airbag off without the right tools, is a steering wheel puller absolutely necessary or will it come off without one? I'm used to european cars that don't require pullers (never understoodd why a steering wheel needs to get pressed on anyways??).

Nathan's thread really gives me a good idea of what it looks like and how it works. I've read it's a *****. Hopefully I won't lose my $hit...working on cars has gotten the best of me sometimes :)

Thanks for sharing gents.

I got mine off in 5 minutes......the most important thing is the depth of the tool. Make a mark (I used tape) on the allen wrench at 1 5/8". That is how deep the releases are.

As you sit in the seat, the release is slightly back towards you.

So I got the new wheel in but was a bit of a pain. Got the air bag off no problem. The trick to that really is having the right depth or you just end up stabbing around aimlessly looking for the right spot...if you go in 1 5/8" it's right there and easy. The main issue I had was the wheel on my 07 Escalade did need a puller. I luckily had a puller I made way back in shop class in high school (why I still have it I don't know) and bojanged it to work. Took me an hour and a half but got her in. Nice to have a brand new wheel again...like having a new car.

Much better:
