OK. So scratch wiring the sending unit to the gauge. What is the consensus on recommended Fuel Pump/Sending unit? Is it best to stick with delco or is there another brand that is better?

No evidence points to another type of output based on available documentation. Same method to control tranny pressures and fuel output. The damping fluid kills the pulse effect.

5 volt reference is what is sent to the sender. And it is read back as a different value to determine fuel level after passing thru what is basically a potentiometer. Similar to how your TPS works with your gas pedal acting like the float sort of. Now lets assume the dash sets are identical from 97-98 with the exception of the added 4x4 service light. It is known that the fuel pump modules for the 98 still have the same ohm specs for the sender as the 97. Technically if you rewire your fuel pump module you can make the gauge a direct connection. However, you will soon start seeing DTC pop up in relation to it. And not just for the fuel sender system but possibly evap codes as well since they will not function as designed. If we assume that the 98 fuel gauge is the same type as the other three and they have the same part numbers as the 97 then that would mean that the pcm has to create resistance to control the gauge. A way for it to due that is PWM that is likely run thru FET's(Field effect transistor) to create the ground resistance effect. That way it replicates the effect of the way the 97 and older system works. While some of the info is not discussed in any publication. these observations are made based on known part numbers of IP clusters, pictorial references:naughty:, personal and outside observations. I do not have a 98 or newer to do lab work on so proceed carefully if you choose to change the setup. Personally I would just fix what is broken. It is a fuel gauge for F*** sake.

Thank you, that is a lot of information that I did not have before, I know it is just a fuel gauge but having to look at it all the time buzzing away drives me nuts lol. Having access to a junkyard that will let me pull whatever I want I'll go out when the weather is nice and see if I can find another gauge that will work without the buzz
