Id drop a quart of tranny fluid in the engine right before an oil change and let it run in the driveway for 20-30mins and then drain. Put new oil in and see if noise goes away. Cant decide if this sounds like a lifter that is not pumping all the way up or piston slap. The clank toward the end of the sound sure sounds like piston slap. Does noise get worse or more silenced once engine has been driven and heat cycled? Did you inspect exhaust manifold for broken bolts?

So from reading online the ATF myth has been pretty much busted. It is said that any modern motor oil has more additives than ATF does, so I don’t think that’d do much.

Noise stays consistent no matter what temperature. Never really gets louder or quieter, what it’s like in the video is what it’s like all the time. From the research I’ve done it seems like piston slap usually happens on cold starts and goes away fairly quickly unlike this one. I can also hear the tick is coming right from the valve train when the valve cover was off.

0% chance it’s an exhaust leak. Manifolds and gaskets are new with all new hardware and I leak checked them with air and soapy water, no leaks at all.

Well well well folks.... Things have changed, and that is the Suburban may end up getting full top end tear down! Coincidence struck and today I suddenly find myself in ownership of a second vehicle! Just got a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta from my friends mother for the price of.... Drum roll! 200 bucks and helping her with her cats while she's on vacation.

Now here's the catch, Jetta needs transmission work and a little bit of front body work(VW emblem, headlight restoration etc). It still drives and holds every gear but acts super erratic and slips whatever gear it wants whenever, it also hard shifts. Doing research brings me to believe I'm in for a valve body and shift solenoid replacement. So as soon as the trans is figured out on the Jetta it's go time for working on the Burban!

Heres a picture of the Jetta with the Suburban behind it. Calling myself blessed on this one.

Alright folks little update here, I’m going super cheap on this lifter tick fix.

it’s either that or I sell the truck for $1500, which is half of what I paid for it before the tick started.

Confirmed oil pump is doing its job just fine. Oil is getting up to the rockers, so it’s definitely the cylinder 4 intake lifter.

What I’m noticing is that there’s no excessive valve lash at all, so the lifter is still partially doing its job. Based off research, it seems that because there’s no excessive valve lash and everything mostly seems normal the verdict is that the cam lobe is most likely not wiped. So what I’m planning on doing is pulling the one cylinder head and replacing the one lifter(of course I’ll look at the cam lobe) and throwing it back together with a few new gaskets.

Question is, what do you guys think the easiest way to clean up the metal surfaces is? I don’t think the head will be warped, there’s been no signs that it would be warped and has never been overheated. For cleaning I’m thinking for the iron block deck I’ll use a carbide scraper, and some acetone to break up old carbon and gasket material. For the aluminum 862 head I was thinking of using a plastic scraper(I have a set already) with the acetone as well. Think that’ll get the surfaces clean enough?
