Hopefully this is a simple question. The stock plug on the trailer hitch that you'd plug you trailer lights into. Anyone know what the trick is to removing this thing? I'm trying to remove it to replace it with a combo 7-pin / 4-pin plug, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how this thing comes off.

Granted, it's dark, so maybe seeing it in daylight will make it easier, but anyone have any tips here?

I think your talking about removing the socket? The socket is 2 pieces that snap together there are 2 tabs I think that hold it together. To remove it from the bracket you push the 2 tabs and twist. I hope this answers your question. You should be able to see this easily in the daylight.

Before i remove the socket, I have to remove the plug from the back, right? That's the part I'm having issue with. I figure that there's just a tab that I have to push that I'm not seeing. Bah...that's what I get for trying after dark.

honestly, since you only need one at a time (7, 6, OR 4), why not just go to autozone, and buy the 7 pin to 4+6 adapter for $20? ($14 on amazon)

takes a grand total of 3 seconds to plug in... or take out.

I guess I was thinking along the lines of the little punks we've got around here - an adapter is something they could easily remove. Swapping out the socket? yeah, not so easy to do.

But, I did buy the socket at Wally World, so if it proves to be troublesome to install, I'll just take it back and get this adapter you showed above.

only put the adapter in when you're using it?....

with the trailer hooked up kids aren't going to look close enough to see an adapter, and even if they do, i really doubt they'd know how or want to steal it.

This is not so much for a trailer, more for a 3rd brake light hitch step. (Funny part is I didn't order the one with the light, but that's what they sent me.) Once it's in, it'll be in for most of the time.

Little bastard hooligans stole the dealer's hitch cover from my driveway, hence the little bit of concern.

if that's the case i'd just splice in a 4 wire connector behind the 7 pin... google for the pinouts, they cant be that much of a secret.
