Stuck in 3rd, won't start, shifter moves freely.

I have a 2004 Tahoe Z71. Today when I tried to start it I noticed it was showing that it was in 3rd gear and not park. I won't shift back into park. The shifter was in the "Park" position. If I turn the key on and try and shift, the shifter feels abnormally loose. I am guessing some sort of linkage or shift cable, but am concerned it could be electronic. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Leaning toward the problem being the shifter cable.
