a ported box is a 2 tone box essentially, an upper and a lower resonance frequency... a sealed box usually allows for a greater response at the lower frequencies becuase its flat all the way to dropoff vs. a ported box which will drop off sharply after the tuned frequency "bump" greatly reducing the power of the bottom end frequencies which fall below the tuned frequency.
Just to say, I have been installing stereos and alarms professionally since i was 17, now 43. Built many many comp systems back in the day, even worked for Crossfire Car Audio for awhile... I have been around the block a time or two.
All I am saying is that for SQ the idea is get as flat a response on the spectrum as possible so that every sound is being reproduced evenly. And overly heavy bass hides the ribkick that midbass provides which you cant get with a ported 12", Period. Even though we all have our prefered listening setups, a spectrum analyser doesnt lie when holes in your frequency response are there regardless of what your ears/butt feels.
