First cold morning of the year.... Go to start, it lights up, but when I turn to start, nothing, not even a starter click. Put it on the charger, then go to start after a few minutes, and now it says service anti theft system and it won't start. On a whim I go and get the other key from the house and that one starts it up. After repeating a few times it seems that first key won't let it start now. I know that key was a newer replacement to i programmed last year. It has been fine until now. Would a dead battery delete key information?

Last week my wife said the kids were playing in the car, then when she got back in it wouldn't start. She got it jumped and it was good. The battery is only 2.5 years old. Should it be bad already??

How long they last depends on a lot of things. Down here in the south we're happy if even the best battery makes it to two years!

battery could be bad, to reprogram the other key just insert the working one, turn it to start, turn it back to off, then insert the other key and turn to start within 10 seconds, done.

i went ahead and replaced the battery. So we will see if I can rule that out. But so far, when it's not connected to the car, the old battery holds charge perfect.

Are there any common battery drains I should look in to?

So it seems like the battery may or may not have been a contributing factor at all. Glad I got it replaced under warranty at three years either way though.

I think the problem is my newer key i got from a website. It doesn't seem to want to remember its programming sometimes so it sets off the security anti theft system. Turns out if you just do the simple key swap programming, it's not the same as a "master key" as programmed by the dealer. A master key is stored forever, whereas an add on key can be lost if the memory clears.

Interesting. That’s the first I’ve heard of a different level of programming for a key.
