SSBC installed

I put these SSBC 14" rotors on both axles of my 01 Yukon 2 years ago, because the OE rotors looked like toys inside the 22" wheels. Yes, they do look good. No, they perform bad.

The brake feeling became soft, longer distance was needed to fully stop. I was not sure which one to blame. I replaced the HAWK LTS pads with Akebono ProACT, seems getting better, not that soft any more.

Here is a picture to share:

You can see, the rotor can take a larger pad. That could help, but requires caliper change. I'm looking at PBR B862-365PL calipers, which are used in the BAER big rotor kit. Somebody in this forum tried to put these on with BAER big rotors a couple years back, any updates?

The best choice I think is the Brembo big rotor kit. There was a used kit on eBay, sold at $800 (New for $7000). Unfortunately, this won't happen everyday.

After reading more info, whats the point of having 14" rotors if you keep the stock calipers? If you keep the stock calipers and then you are not gaining anything. The GMT900 conversion gives you bigger rotors and calipers. Plus if you do the hyrdoboost conversion then you get awesome pedal response (2500-3500 trucks came from the factory with hydroboost). Then if you add stainless steel brake lines you have a good setup for stopping. I did it to mine and it has been a considerable amount of stopping distance reduced.

Hi, 01Konvict:
Could you share which model of GMT900 hydroboost you got? I'm interested in getting a upgraded master cylinder. Thanks.

The GMT 900 is a bigger brake conversion to the NNBS 07-Current. If you want 13" rotors vs 12" (GMT 800, 99-06) trucks. Just order a new caliper with bracket, pads, and rotors for a 07 and it will all bolt directly up.

The hydroboost conversion comes from 99-06 2550 & 3500 trucks, also some denalis, escalades, and I believe all Z71 Hoes came with them. I searched a local junk yard and found mine from a 05 2500 with pedal for $115. Then ordered lines for another $40 and a little bit of time and PS fluid I was back running and no more mushy pedal. Check this thread out for details.

more questions for HB conversion

Hi, 01Konvict:

After surfing around, here are some questions for you, since we have the same year model:

1. Without changing the PS pump, some people reported pump groaning. After replaced it with the pump that equips with HB, the problem went away. Did you get such problem?
http://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...droboost-conversion-now-whiny-ps-pump-468170/

2. Some said the low pressure from HB connecting to gearbox low pressure would cause gearbox malfunction, they recommend to connect it between radiator and PS pump (after cooling). Any problem with your setup?

3. If you buy the high pressure hose for 2000 Sierra 2500, you may not need to bend it. I found the outlet of that PS pump is facing front also. That pump has solenoid valve for evo system(?), just like ours, but with 2 inlets (1 for HB feedback).

4. Newer GM PS pump has no solenoid valve anymore. If I get this kind of pump, can I let the wire floating? I heard that will cause 100% boost for steering, but seems no body complains the boost from no solenoid pump, maybe it uses fixed valve.

Anyway, just try to predict what will happen after the conversion, thanks for helping.

1. The pump groaning is from poor bleeding or trash in the system. My pump made some noise for the first few minutes since I was bleeding the air out of the system. After that all good to go with no issues.

2. Haven't heard of any failed gearboxes from tapping the low pressure line. I don't see where it would hurt anything besides having extra fluid in the gearbox. I will know if something fails in the future but I don't foresee any issues.

3. Correct, the 00 2500 hoses should work just fine. I goofed and ordered the wrong hoses for my pump but got them to work.

4. If you change to the newer pump and remove the sensor wire then you may get a warning light. You could place a wire in both terminals and the computer will think its grounded and the light may go off. My guess is the valve is now internal or none but either way it won't effect the performance of the booster or steering.

I think your conversion will go great, just flush your booster and flush the whole system until the new fluid is present in all systems. I kept cracking open lines and refilling the pump until all new fluid was present with no signs of mixed fluids.
