Most 5.3s in that model year are flex fuel and the fuel pump setup is different than the standard GM fuel pump of the past. And yes, changing your fuel filter every 30-50k miles is KEY to the life of the fuel pump... a clogged or mostly clogged filter will kill a fuel pump in short order because of the amps it has to pull to keep the rail pressure correct.

You can run the cheaper pumps but you will have to modify the bucket and lines. And if it's currently flex fuel and you plan to sell the truck later, you MUST tell the next owner that they can not run E85 in it. Nowadays the laws are changing in many states where you can be sued by the next owner for tampering with any emissions related equipment (which includes the fuel system) on a vehicle without disclosing the modifications first. What applies is, in this instance, you sell the "flex fuel" truck without a flex fuel pump in it, the next owner uses E85 and things mess up, you can be hit with a tort claim of some sort. Just giving you a heads up.

Finally, for a daily driver I wouldn't use anything but OEM pumps. Having owned a few dozen GM trucks in my business through the years, non-OEM pumps just do not hold up over the long term. All it takes is getting stranded one time with an aftermarket pump (resulting in large towing and/or mechanics/dealership bills when you can't fix it yourself) and you'll kick yourself over trying to save a hundred bucks. In my experience, the OEMs would usually last to around 150k miles (some going over 200k), while aftermarket pumps were considerably less.

Bad fuel pumps in Chevy trucks are common. We used to have them go bad all the time at my work in our 1 ton cargo vans. I had 1 die in my Astro van once too.

Another thing that helps them live a bit longer. Never let your tank get below 1/4 tank. 1/2 tank would be better. The fuel acts as a coolant for the pump. Let it get below a 1/4 there's not a enough fuel to keep the pump from getting hot and going bad prematurely.

Man, tough luck. I've only ever heard of a few frying harnesses but 145+ amps is enough to do it.

I would also test the fuel pump relay while you have it apart. If it sent enough amps through the system to fry the wire harness it can damage relays in the process.
