The mystery noise game!

I'm afraid of going the junk yard route because the way my luck runs...I'll get one that makes the same noise. I did consider it though.

UPDATE: Took it to another mechanic I've used in the past that I quit using because it would always take a couple of days to clean my car when I got it back. (I'm pretty picky.)
Anyway, he put it on the rack, after driving it, and says its the differential. He said I could source the replacement, bring it to him and he would charge $400 for the swap.

He's never steered me wrong so I think I'm going to take him up on it.

I'd def get a second opinion. I hate greedy mechanics. So hard to find a good honest one today, not impossible, just hard.

Another option. Buy four good quality jack stands and an automotive stethoscope.

After jacking up all four wheels start engine and put in all wheel drive if you have that option. Have a helper "drive" the car while you roll around on a creeper with the stethoscope.

You should be able to diagnose by the volume of noise. If that differential is noisy, you will know. If it is a hub, you will hear the difference out near the end of the axles. Just watch out for those moving parts!
