Yukons in nbs are a hard find in ny. 85% tahoes 15% yukons. Yukons do look the best in my eyes also.

Here comes a stupid question from that foreign guy;
Why is it you prefer those 4.10 gears over 3.73? Performance wise.

Two reasons:

1) You can put bigger tires on the truck without compromising the performance (as much)

2) The engine has lower gearing for better get up and go. You lose top end and fuel mileage, but performance guys generally don't care.

I'm putting 4.10's in my Jeep this afternoon, as a matter of fact. Anyone wants to come over, drink beer, and watch me screw up the preload/backlash is more than welcome.

Thanks for all the replies!

After test driving a few yukons--most with the 3.73 gears and the one with the 4.10 I'm pretty sold on having the 4.10 gears. I'm going to get some quotes on the gear change and see if it's feasible. A tune would be awesome to do at the same time...

There's a lot of Tahoe Z71's around with the 4.10 gears. I would get one of those, but I prefer the look of the Yukon over the Tahoes (and Denali even more so, but I don't want the AWD system). I had thought about getting a Tahoe Z71 and putting the Yukon front end on, but I don't know what's all involved in that.

Thanks again!

I have the denali AWD system, and you are right. Stay away from it if you want or are used to a "real" four wheel drive system. I will say that it is nice to put the girls into it and know that they will get there safely, but that's about all. I miss having a 4 low.

Couldn't have said it better, Wildernessjeep. I prefer having a quicker start of the line too than a 1-2 mpg gain. If I wanted fuel economy I'd stick to 4-banger cars and tents! That's not for me. A lift, tires, and better headlights are next on the table after I finally find the right truck.

In related news, I got done quotes on regearing the truck, and it does sound a bit more money than I had first expected. So I'm back to looking for Yukons specifically with the 4.10 gears. Or I might cave and buy a Tahoe z71... :p

I bought my 03 last october with 179k on it, nothing wrong with body and the only rust was on the nerf bars which i still havent taken off. I only paid $4000 for it and it runs pretty good getting 16/mpg on trips using the cruise. Be patient......you will find the deal you want and the truck you want.

I don't know what they are charging you to install. Should be about $300 an axle, plus parts. I like east coast gear supply. They really help out with tech advice and quick shipping on the parts you "forgot".

If you have a decent tool set and covered/secure workspace, you might consider doing it yourself. Not much to screw up inside a differential. Set your preload (normally set by shims), set your backlash (more shims), and test your tooth pattern. Once you have that done, bolt it back up. Check the link.

So, update... I'm still searching. Who knew finding a decent Yukon with the 4.10 gears would be so hard? Heck, even several Tahoe Z71's that I've looked at didn't have these gears. Didn't think they were that rare, to be honest. But, I'm not stopping till I find the right one!

I do have a new question in my search:

Is there any package or specific options (such as Z71 or SLT) that came with either the Yukons or Tahoes that would normally include the 4.10 (GT5) gear option as well? Any packages/options that are always found with the 4.10 gears?

Reason I ask is I've primarily kept my search to Yukon SLTs or Tahoe Z71's, but did the SLE's or LT versions of these vehicles have the option of the GT5 4.10 gears?

Thanks as always for everyone's help!

In regards to your first post I got my wife her 2002 Tahoe LT which the dealership wanted $10K plus TT&L. For $4700 plus TT&L came out to $5300. In near perfect shape car fax , I checked it and so did a friends shop. I went with cash. Money talks and ******** walks! Her Tahoe had 134,000 miles and the leather wasn't even worn. 5.3L tow package, LT. With 3.73's..

What I am saying is cash money makes things happen! And if its ten years or older. Look at what the dealer ships would give you on trade in!

The money you save can go to mod money!

Tahoe $5300 counting TT&L

My wife's hood was $250 plus paint, bumper around the same, headlights and turn lights $120 with free shipping, 6 sets of HIDs from DDM. Around $90. , window tint $80., painted to match grill I can't remember, 20" wheels and tires $1000 even , duel exhaust $150, DD navi radio. Off eBay $350. ( someone stole it and insurence got us a new one for $1800). , led interior. Scottyboy on here did for us pice flucuwaits , candied tail lights I did free, black speed grills $135, AFE CAI $250, Free flow cats $400, tune $300,

I've never changed out gears in a vehicle before, tbh. Not sure on how to go about it either, and don't know if I have all the tools. Heck, I wouldn't even know what to buy to being with. A recommended shop gave me a quote of around $2000+ for brand new gears and installation! Ouch. I don't think I want to go that route, but if there was a simple guide on the how and everything I would give it a try.

As for buying the truck, I agree: cash talks and is the way to go! I'm not looking to finance anything anyways. I've got the cash, now I just need to find the right vehicle.
