Big duramax fans all know that the best years that GM produced the DMax was from 06-07.5. No emission crap and 360hp 650lbft. IF you look at the vin, look at the 8th numeral, if it is a D, then youll have an LBZ. You also get the new 6 speed allison.

yeah the 06 DMAX is awesome and the 6 Speed Allison is really neet. I would not even think about getting a pre 06 DMAX, now the 2011 DMAX has even more power and torque but yeah I have heard it has a bunch more emmisions crap.

Once I pay off my SS I am thinking about getting a DMAX and it has to be an 06 or 07classic. I dont like the newest body style as much. My Dads 06 DMAX is such a beast and he gets much better Gas mileage than my SS or Hoe

And as for the 8.1 its is an ok engine, the only thing it has going for it is its 455 Ft/lbs of torque, which is good for a gas engine. But My mom had the 8.1 in a Suburban and it sucked gas like crazy, plus there are hardly any performance upgrades.

I say go with a DMAX (Even a 01-05 would be ok but not as good as an 06+) but if you want gas just go with the 6.0, there are lots of performance upgrades and you could have it produce much more power/torque than the 8.1 and get better fuel econemy
