Would have to hear the sound but there are several things it could be.
My first thought is a slow fill lifter. Many causes of that like a small piece of dirt blocking the passages.
Second thought is blow by in the exhaust manifold. But that's usually almost constant.
Power steering pump can make some ticking sounds at times also. Again, usually constant.

I'd try to get a recording for people to listen to as that will help.
A cheap digital recorder does wonders. I bought one a couple years ago and zip tied it under the hood for a time.
It recorded some crazy hours! Something like 100 hours?
Thing is smaller then a deck of cards.

I've also seen a cracked radiator fan cause a ticking sound. Those can be as random as your stateing.

Forgot to mention to check the exhaust manifold bolts. VERY common for them to snap (look for missing bolt heads) and the leaking exhaust gasket can sound very much like a lifter tick. The sound comes and goes as the parts heat up and cool down. Your lifters may be perfectly fine!

Yep, I thought mine had developed lifter tick on the passenger side but it was broken exhaust manifold bolts causing an exhaust leak. There are clamps to fix it if you can’t extract the broken bolts.

I'm having a very similar issue that sounds like what you're mentioning. Happens sometimes when I start it in the morning, especially when its cold. Goes away by 2nd gear and doesn't come back.

As Mark mentioned, there are clamps to fix it to avoid the potential PITA of extracting the remains of the broken bolts. Just the fact that there are clamps for this specific purpose tells you how common of a problem it is.
