What you do to your truck will come down to what kind of money you want to spend.

Stage One: intake, exhaust, tune
Stage Two: cam, headers, F/I
Stage Three: gears, trans, spray

Whatever you do, get a vette servo for your transmission. You can get one for under 20 bucks and they are pretty easy to install yourself. I did mine in less than an hour.
Much firmer shifts for 20 bucks, no better mod for the money.

You'll need a large flathead screwdriver, or a prybar, a medium sized flathead screwdriver, some channel locks, a C clamp, nothing special. Look on youtube, there are tons of how-to videos on swapping the servo out. Also, there are tons of how-to's on other truck forums, like Fullsizechevy.com, gmfullsize.com, and www.truckmodcentral.com. Just search for "vette servo" or "corvette servo".
