As many of you know, I have had some shit luck with my 93. I'm still hanging on though, been tinkering with it and messing with a few things. However, I've run across a 1990 GMC 2500 with the same 350 5.7 that my hoe has in it... I was wondering what all could be swapped? I'm hoping for at least the heads, intake and exhaust manifolds, possibly the radiator, the serpentine belt, anything else that could be done? I'm pretty sure theyre almost the exact same motor, but i have noticed a few differences. maybe a list of what is NOT compatible would be shorter. Any help or tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot y'all

90 and 93 were both TBI, everything should swap, why go thru all that hassle for no gain though??

lol youve read my other thread, i still havent found my problem w how it runs and the other motor has less than 50,000 miles on it. driven in a parking lot its whole life. and im getting it for $200. and my motor is just causing me problems so im gonna find whats good on each one and frankenstein them together.

also, how the hell do you get an exhaust mani bolt outta a head w.o damaging the head? its sticking out but i cant get it to move to save my life. also got two stickin outta the mani itself on the flange of it.

also, what all can i clean myself, and what should i send to a shop to get done? i know all my surfaces have to be nice and flat but can i go crazy w some parts cleaner and a brass brush on anything myself??

Let the exhaust warm up to temp ad then try it ... that has always worked for me. Might be worth just throwing some header on during all this work ...

You can clean just about anything by yourself the top of the block and the bores and be cleaned with a metal brush, you can do most of the heads by yourself, if you want them super clean only a shop can do that.

why not just swap in the other engine that runs good instead of trying to put them together and possibly have the same results you already have?

the other motor is at a junkyard. there is "something" wrong with it that they dont know about and a yard isnt gonna hunt it down for me so im hoping when i pull it, either i wont get whats broken, or ill find it when i put it on. im considering having the heads done by a shop if theyll give me the right price on it. id really love for everything to be amazingly clean when i do the swap. including the intake manifold and a new egr, little things like that, that i havent replaced yet.

and i had to drill the bolts outta the flange on my exhaust manifold. anyone know if the threads are truly 3/8"-16? im pretty sure they are and i think im just gonna tap em out. and i still have yet to try and get the bolt outta my head. im a lil scared to tackle that one.

and at 170k miles, is it safe to drop the tranny pan and change the filter and the fluid in the pan? or will i lose a lot of the metal flakes and maybe **** myself over?

Def have the heads checked ... Did you ever get a scanner to watch the real time stuff going on?? Would suck to do all this and realize it's an electrical issue with a wire or sensor ...

170K on a stocker?? You will probably kill it, with or without a fluid change. I just hit 104K on my rebuild, fluid has been changed twice now ...

Pretyy sure it's 3/8x16, I can check the ones I have in my garage against the tap set I have ...

the thread pattern is m10 - 1.50 for the exhaust flange bolts.

i plan on having the heads machined and checked off the new motor but i cant run real time stuff on it because its in a yard and a few parts have been taken off of it.

and is it hard to just rebuild a tranny? i know its about 2k to have it done but is that because of labor or parts? if i bought a rebuild kit would it really be all that complicated??

If you pull the trans and take it in it will be much cheaper,I had the 4L60e in my 96 rebuilt with the updated pump, valvebody and shift kit for $1100 with a 2 yr warranty.

The 4L60 isn't all that hard to rebuild. My home build has just over 100K on it now. Cost about $1200 in parts.
